Originally dubbed “Beast Quakes,” after a gravity-defying touchdown run by Marshawn “Beast Mode” Lynch, the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network (PNSN) helps Seahawks fans, collectively named the 12th man, see how their celebrations literally shake the earth.

PNSN pulls the data from seismometers installed under Seattle’s CenturyLink Field, which measure the seismic activity that results from fans as they rejoice about the Seahawks’ performance. The streaming of “QuickShake” data is based on open source software, with the internet-facing components hosted on Microsoft Azure.

For a behind-the-scenes look at how Microsoft worked with the seismic pros at PNSN to quantify the power of the 12th man, visit the Microsoft News Center or watch this video.
